Historical Background of Halloween
Samhain
The origins of Halloween date back to the ancient Celtic festival Samhain, which was celebrated approximately 2,000 years ago in what is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Northern France. Samhain marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter, a period often associated with death and darkness. The Celts believed that on the evening of October 31, the spirits of the dead returned to earth. To protect themselves and appease the spirits, bonfires were lit and people wore costumes of animal heads and skins. Halloween is the second largest commercial holiday in the US after Christmas.
All Saints
In the 8th century, Pope Gregory III moved the Christian feast of All Saints to November 1. The evening before was called All Hallows’ Eve, which eventually evolved into Halloween. This was a time to honor the saints (hallows) and martyrs.
Symbols and Traditions
Jack-o’-lanterns
One of the most iconic symbols of Halloween is the jack-o’-lantern, a hollowed-out pumpkin with a face carved into it and a candle inside. This tradition stems from the Irish story of Stingy Jack, a man who had deceived the devil multiple times and, after his death, was condemned to wander around with a glowing coal inside a hollowed-out turnip. The Irish brought this tradition to America, where pumpkins, being abundant, were used instead of turnips.
Costumes
Wearing costumes during Halloween is a remnant of Celtic and medieval traditions. People dressed up to ward off evil spirits or to mislead them. Nowadays, costumes range from scary characters like ghosts and vampires to popular culture figures like superheroes and movie characters.
Trick-or-Treating Trick-or-treating, that is the true tradition of Halloween. Children go door to door in costumes asking for candy. It has its roots in the medieval practice of ‘souling’. Poor people went from door to door asking for food in exchange for prayers for the souls of the deceased. In the 19th and 20th centuries, especially after the mass immigration of Irish and Scots to the United States, this tradition developed into its current form.
Bonfires and Haunted Houses
Bonfires have their origins in Samhain traditions and remain a part of some Halloween celebrations. Haunted houses are a modern addition and offer people the chance to recreate terrifying and scary experiences as entertainment.

Nowadays, Halloween is celebrated with parties, lantern parades, and events that involve both children and adults. Many people decorate their homes with scary decorations such as spiderwebs, skeletons, and pumpkins.
Worldwide Celebrations
Although Halloween is primarily celebrated in Western countries, the traditions are gaining popularity in other parts of the world, such as Japan, Australia, and some European countries. These countries often have their own unique ways of celebrating Halloween, sometimes combined with local traditions. In our village of Bladel, for example, they tell the legend of the witch “Black Kaat”. In addition, they are organizing a walking tour for children and adults to experience the legend of Black Kaat.
